Travel to Darjeeling for the Mahakal Temple located on Observatory Hill. In that place, where the Buddhist Monastery ‘Dorje Ling’ once stood, the Mahakal Mandir stands as a magnificent and historical edifice. Legend has it that shiva-lingam representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar manifested here in 1782. A religious shrine, the Mahakal Temple of Darjeeling, was born out of this.
Darjeeling’s air filled with purity and peace thanks to the sanctity of the Mahakal Mandir, also known as God’s abode. As a panopticon, it provides a bird’s eye view of this hill station, which has undergone significant changes over the years. The Temple is at the highest point of Mall Road.
In addition to being breathtakingly beautiful, the walk is well-deservedly popular. When visiting the Temple, it is not uncommon to see tourists conversing with the residents; older women and men walk faster than the younger ones and ring the bells louder than their younger counterparts. Despite having reached the destination, the vibrancy of this short journey persists, as prayer flags, holy threads, and khadas adorn the railings and bars along the way.
